MOUNT OLYMPUS WATERS INTRODUCES NEW OXO-BIODEGRADABLE AND RECYCLABLE BOTTLE CALLED REVERTE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Salt Lake City, Utah, Sept.16, 2009—Mount Olympus Waters, Inc. is introducing its new oxo-biodegradable and recyclable “Reverte” plastic bottles in Mountain West in stores and as an official sponsor of the Utah State Fair this week. “This container will lead the way in environmental responsibility by the bottled water industry,” said William C. Bailey, president of Mount Olympus www.mowi.com The bottle carries the company’s 20 ounce “MT. O” label and contains water from the company’s single source, a spring located in a federally protected wilderness area in the Wasatch Mountains. The spring has been the source of all Mount Olympus water since the company was founded in 1898. See fact sheet >>>>> Reverte was developed by Planet Green Bottle Corporation, a headquartered in the U.K. www.planetgreenbottle.com. Planet Green representatives will be part of the Utah State Fair’s Greener Utah exhibit Sept. 17-20 and will answer technical questions about the bottle. “We are pleased that a Utah’s Own company is among the very first bottlers in the U.S. to offer our consumers a bottle that is both recyclable and oxo-biodegradable,” said Bailey. “We urge recycling first and foremost,” said Bailey, noting that in 2007 more than 2.3 billion pounds of plastic bottles were recycled. According to Earth 911, plastic PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles are recycled at a constant rate of 24 per cent a year. “We would like to see that number double in the next five years,” Mr. Bailey said. “We expect recycling to grow as public awareness grows and as more recycling stations are added in our communities.” He encouraged curbside recycling in Utah communities where available, including, including Salt Lake County and Salt Lake City. The Reverte bottle is recyclable and does not interfere with the recycling stream, but if it does end up in a landfill, it will biodegrade over time and microbial decomposition will turn it in to CO 2 and water. Oxo-biodegradable (OBD) plastic is a material to which has been added very small amounts of catalyzing salts. These aid the natural degradation process of PET bottles to speed it up so that the plastic will degrade to produce water, carbon dioxide and biomass. The process is shortened from hundreds of years to months for degradation. Thereafter biodegradation depends on the micro-organisms in the environment. Planet Green approached Mount Olympus in 2008 to partner with it to introduce the package in the U.S., said Bailey. “We are among the first bottle water companies in the U.S. to offer this unique Reverte bottle,” said Bailey. He said the company plans to convert all of its containers to Reverte over time. ### |
